Brass fittings have been in use since the ancient times. Brass is the common name given to the metal element that is formed by heating copper and forming it into brass. Brass can be bent, dented and shaped into numerous designs. Brass has a rich history and people prefer to use brass for various applications. Brass is corrosion resistant and its ductility also makes it ideal for use in plasters, paintings, etc.
Brass fittings are generally used for gas, water, chemicals, fires, etc. Brass fittings produced by forging and then machining are available in various shapes and thread counts to connect, control flow, regulate air or any liquid present in the piping or tubing. Depending on our requirement we can either choose a threaded fitting or a non-threaded fitting. Brass is a non toxic and biodegradable metal. It can withstand extreme temperatures and is non intrusive.
Various metals can be worked into brass fittings, however the most commonly used metal for brazing are copper, zinc, tin, aluminium and iron. All these metals undergo heating, cooling and bending during fabrication. The metal is first heated until malleability occurs and then a high alloy iron is used to create the brass fittings. During this process the outer surface of the metal is hammered and then the inner surface is filed to create a desired shape. After shaping is complete, the fitting is then baked under extremely low temperatures.
Another metal used for brazing is tin. It can also be alloyed with other elements like steel, nickel and chrome. Zinc is another popular alloy used in making brass fittings as it is corrosion resistant and ductile. It is also used to produce mild steel in forging as well as in electroplating.
Brass has the property to bend and flex at different stress points while it is bending. This property enables the brass fittings to be shaped into various shapes. For example, it can be formed into tubes, danglers, blocks, flange connecting fittings and connecting prongs. These shapes are more durable than the conventional shapes. Some of these brass fittings available in the market are made of both brass and nickel.
When it comes to brass plumbing fittings, it is a very useful metal as it is flexible and durable. It is able to resist extreme temperatures and is anti-corrosive. Since it is resistant to corrosion, it can be used in the industry for a long period of time and produces good quality items.
